Top list of famous Croats who changed history
April 4, 2025The island of Brač definitely ranks among the destinations you must not miss during your holiday in Croatia. Located less than an hour away by ferry, or half an hour by catamaran from Split, it is a popular choice for tourists seeking a one- or two-day trip. In addition to the world-famous Zlatni Rat beach, Brač is known for its white stone, small picturesque fishing villages, and numerous medieval chapels. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of places we recommend you visit while on Brač.
You can reach Brač in several ways, depending on where you are and which part of the island is your final destination. From Split, a ferry departs that takes 50 minutes to Brač, specifically to Supetar, while a catamaran takes 30 minutes to Milna, a small town on the western side of Brač.
You can also reach Brač in about an hour from Makarska by ferry, which docks in the town of Sumartin.
Also, keep in mind that ferry lines are less frequent in the off-season, and tickets cannot be reserved in advance — they must be purchased at the ferry port ticket office on the day of departure.
The best option is to come from Split to Supetar, since Supetar is the largest town and also the island’s main hub. From there, you can reach other places such as Bol, Postira, Sutivan, Sumartin, Milna by car, taxi, or local bus lines.
Supetar

Supetar, named after Saint Peter, is the largest town on Brač and the only one with city status. The archaic beauty of Supetar inspired American real estate developer Jeff Blackard to build a replica of Supetar in McKinney, Texas. Supetar is ideal for all history enthusiasts, who can explore medieval churches, early Christian mosaics, remnants of a Roman villa, and a noble family’s mausoleum. While strolling through Supetar’s stone alleys, be sure to visit the Church of the Annunciation of Mary from the 18th century, built on the remains of an early Christian church. Also visit the Petrinović family mausoleum, made of white Brač stone in a neo-Byzantine style, located in the cemetery above Supetar.
For those seeking activity, Supetar hides several hiking trails, including the Maslinovi puti walking trail and the Dolčevita walking and gourmet trail. The 6-kilometer-long Maslinovi puti trail starts in the village of Mirca and leads visitors through surrounding olive groves, ending in the village of Prihod, where you can see a traditional method of olive oil production. The Dolčevita trail, also 6 kilometers long, takes visitors through the lush inland areas surrounding Supetar. The trail passes through picturesque villages Donji Humac and Dračevica, as well as several local eateries where you can sample wine, local lamb, olive oil, and cheese.
For guests seeking refreshment from the summer heat, we recommend Banj Bay, which features a sandy beach suitable for families with children.
Bol

At the other end of Brač lies the island’s oldest settlement, Bol. The drive from Supetar to Bol takes 40 minutes. Bol is world-famous for its stunning Zlatni Rat beach, which, due to its elongated and often shifting shape resembling a tongue, is one of the most frequently used visuals in Croatia’s tourist promotions. Be sure to take a swim at this fine pebble beach. Although it can get crowded during the day, just before sunset there are significantly fewer people. Take the opportunity to enjoy a swim in the clear sea while watching the sunset.
If you’d prefer a less crowded beach, take a walk along the seaside promenade from Zlatni Rat to Bol and you’ll come across beaches such as Borak Beach, Potočine Beach, or Benačica Beach.
Towering over Zlatni Rat is Vidova Gora – the highest peak on the Adriatic islands (780 m). It can be reached by car or on foot. From Vidova Gora, you'll have a magnificent view of Zlatni Rat, Bol, and even the island of Hvar. Take a break at the top where you can sit at a wooden table and refresh yourself.
Between Bol and Milna lies Blaca Hermitage, once home to hermit monks. Today, it houses a museum preserving fascinating artifacts such as telescopes, gramophones, and a piano, all of which reflect the everyday life of monks who chose a solitary existence devoted to God.
Interesting fact from Bol on Brač
One unique attraction in Bol on the island of Brač is the cultural monument known as the "House within a house". This unusual 19th-century structure tells the story of a poor laborer, Marko Silo, whose modest home was surrounded by the walls of a larger house being built by the Vuković brothers. After a tragic shipwreck in which the brothers lost their lives, Marko returned to live in his house, which is today known as the "House within a house".
Milna

Among the smaller towns on the island of Brač, we recommend Milna and Sutivan.
Milna is a small fishing village on the western coast of Brač. As you stroll along the local waterfront, discover restaurants, cafés, souvenir shops, and soak up the local Mediterranean way of life. This little town hides many secluded coves that you can explore by diving or renting a small boat. Milna is also ideal for sailors, offering three marinas with over 300 berths.
Sutivan

Sutivan is a picturesque coastal town on the northwestern side of Brač. Sutivan was once the center of many Brač families, such as the Definis, Marjanović, and Ilić families, whose houses still adorn the town. In Sutivan, you’ll also find the estate of the Split-born Baroque poet Jerolim Kavanjin, featuring a summer residence, garden, and smaller houses.
The town and its surroundings can be explored by bike. In fact, three cycling trails start in Sutivan: the Maestral trail, the Tramuntana trail, and the Levant trail. Cycling these paths will take you past chapels, small churches, and olive groves — a perfect way to discover the natural and cultural beauty of the island of Brač.
Travel Tip
Animal lovers and children will enjoy the Sutivan Nature Park, located 2 kilometers from Milna. Within the park, you’ll find botanical gardens, various fun activities for children (swings, sandpits, trampoline), a fountain with fish, and a restaurant offering local specialties.
